Welcome to your new work device. Included in your purchase of this device is enrollment into UC Merced's managed device system. This is mandated for all new university owned devices (including this device). To help you get set up and ready to go, we've pulled together what you need to know for ease of access. Ready to get started?
Note: If you're visiting this page and have a new device not purchased through UC Merced's curated device catalogs, you can find info on getting your device into our managed device system on the ServiceHub.
How Do I Login To My Device?
The first thing you'll need to do once your device is powered on, is going through the basic personal setup steps associated with your device. This may include selecting your preferred language, identifying your region of use, and adjusting your accessibility settings. Once those are squared away, you will be prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network. If you are on campus, please utilize a UC Merced network like eduroam. If you are off campus, please connect to a secured network such as your home Wi-Fi.
It is at this point, you will encounter a screen notifying you of the device's status as a remotely managed device owned by the university. There are two pathways forward depending on your device. One for Windows, one for Mac OS X. For assistance, please review our setup guides.
- Mac (to be linked, draft in progress)
- Windows (to be linked, draft in progress)
How Long Will It Take?
While initial setup should take anywhere between a few moments to around 40 minutes depending on your internet speed, full enrollment and configuration will continue in the background over the next 24 hours.
What Your Device Is Doing?
Currently our device management system is installing and setting up ProtectUs Essentials on your device. Included in the ProtectUs Essentials is EDR, VMP, encryption, and backup software. For more detailed information on the essentials, visit the ServiceHub.
In future, OIT will offer automatic installation of campus programs during initial setup. This may include software such as the M365 suite, Box Drive, VPN, and more. Please watch the Monday Memo and other UC Merced communication channels (including this webpage) for updates.
When Is My Device Ready?
Once your device displays your desktop it is ready for use. As mentioned above, some configuration elements will continue through the first 24 hours of use so make sure to keep it powered on and charged.
How Do I Get Help With My Device?
OIT support for newly purchased devices is provided during standard operating hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Support is provided at the Service Desk location (COB1 127) or remotely via the ServiceHub.
